An aVLSI Basis for Dendritic Adaptation

چکیده

We have developed and described an analog electronic circuit that adapts the electrotonic properties of a silicon dendrite. The dendrite is modeled by the method of compartmental modeling, consisting of three dendritic compartments each containing a synaptic conductance, and one somatic compartment containing a spiking mechanism. Dendritic synaptic input is represented as an activity signal, which scales the leakage conductance of the dendrite. This adaptive feedback loop ensures a controlled synaptic integration in the dendrite, and so regulates the somatic firing frequency. The general adaptive mechanism can therefore be used for building highly dynamic neural networks.

A wide-field direction-selective aVLSI spiking neuron

We describe an analog Very-Large-Scale Integrated (aVLSI) wide-field direction-selective spiking neuron that responds robustly to both natural and artificial images. The circuitry is based on a model of the wide-field direction-selective neurons in the fly visual system. The architecture of the chip closely follows the anatomical layout of the fly visual system. The circuit has a one-dimensiona...

An aVLSI Cricket Ear Model

Female crickets can locate males by phonotaxis to the mating song they produce. The behaviour and underlying physiology has been studied in some depth showing that the cricket auditory system solves this complex problem in a unique manner. We present an analogue very large scale integrated (aVLSI) circuit model of this process and show that results from testing the circuit agree with simulation...

Analog Very Large Scale Integration Implementation of Dendrite Segment with Voltage Dependent Spiking Behavior

I. INTRODUCIION The first silicon retina, designed by Mead and Mahowald in the late 1980's [I], was an analog Very Large Scale Integration (aVLSI) system. The success of early Integrated Circuit (IC) implementations of biologically accurate neural circuits led to the exploration of many other computational systems, as well as work on development of silicon models of single neurons [2]. These aV...

Multilayer Processing of Spatiotemporal Spike Patterns in a Neuron with Active Dendrites

With the advent of new experimental evidence showing that dendrites play an active role in processing a neuron's inputs, we revisit the question of a suitable abstraction for the computing function of a neuron in processing spatiotemporal input patterns. Although the integrative role of a neuron in relation to the spatial clustering of synaptic inputs can be described by a two-layer neural netw...

Beneficial effect of Boswellia serrata gum resin on spatial learning and the dendritic tree of dentate gyrus granule cells in aged rats

Objective: The hippocampal formation, particularly the dentate gyrus (DG), shows age-related morphological changes that could cause memory decline. It is indicated that Boswellia resins attenuates memory deficits and the major component of Boswellia serrata (Bs) gum resin, beta boswellic acid increased neurite outgrowth and branching in hippocampal neurons. This study was designed to investigat...
